My final project at Thayer was a year long endeavor to optimize the FarmBot, an open source CNC backyard farming machine. Our team started from the bottom up looking for ways to simplify costs, design, and function. We performed a mechanical redesign with emphasis on Design for Manufacture techniques, fabricated our own prototype, performed weather & field testing, and completed market and sales projections. Our final product had an 88% part count reduction and 70% cost reduction compared to the benchmark design.
